Training a Bullmastiff: what works and what to expect

Bullmastiffs are intelligent but independent, and they tend to ask why before complying. Calm, consistent training with food rewards works far better than force, and short sessions keep them interested. Teach loose-lead walking early, because a 55 kg dog that pulls is a real hazard on an icy pavement.
Socialization between 8 and 16 weeks shapes the adult, so let the puppy meet many calm people, dogs, sounds and places. Build a visitor routine, such as going to a mat when the doorbell rings and getting a treat there. Without that groundwork, the guarding instinct can turn into suspicion of every stranger.
