The breed's long back and short legs make it prone to intervertebral disc disease, where a disc in the spine bulges or ruptures. Cardigans are also known for degenerative myelopathy, a progressive spinal cord condition in older dogs, as well as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Obesity increases strain on both back and joints.

Good breeders screen hips, check eyes and use DNA tests for degenerative myelopathy and a form of retinal atrophy seen in the breed. At home, keep your dog slim, use ramps where possible and discourage jumping off furniture. See a vet urgently if your Cardigan suddenly cries out, walks unsteadily, drags a back leg or cannot stand, since quick treatment of back problems can make a big difference.
