Puli health: what owners should know

Conditions the Puli is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.

Health issues reported in the breed include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and other eye diseases, degenerative myelopathy and luxating patellas. Responsible breeders screen hips and eyes, run available DNA tests and share the results openly. Skin problems can also develop if cords stay damp against the skin for long periods.

Thorough drying after baths and rain, a lean body and regular coat inspections are the key habits. Contact a vet if you notice a sour or musty smell from the skin under the cords, red or irritated skin, hind leg weakness or scuffed toenails in an older dog, or difficulty seeing in low light.
