Cardigan Welsh Corgi feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
An adult Cardigan of around 15 kg (33 lb) usually needs 180 to 250 g of dry food daily, about 2 to 2.5 cups, split into two meals. Cardigans are enthusiastic eaters and gain weight easily, especially after neutering or in middle age. Extra weight is particularly harmful for a dog with a long back and short legs.
Check body condition every few weeks: you should feel the ribs through a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above, although the thick coat can hide a lot. Running your hands along the sides is more reliable than looking. A food puzzle or slow feeder is useful for dogs that gulp, and it also gives a herding dog something to think about.
Because they are low to the ground, Cardigans eat comfortably from a floor-level bowl, and a raised bowl is rarely necessary. A wide, stable bowl that does not tip helps a dog that pushes its food around.
