Training a Cardigan Welsh Corgi: what works and what to expect
How the Cardigan Welsh Corgi learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Cardigans learn fast and think for themselves, a legacy of working at a distance from the farmer. They respond well to reward-based training with food and play, and they like to know why they are doing something. Repetitive drills bore them, so vary exercises and keep sessions short.
The common challenges are barking, heel nipping and wariness with strangers. Redirect nipping toward a tug toy, teach a reliable 'enough' cue for barking, and socialize widely from 8 to 16 weeks with visitors, traffic and other dogs. A Cardigan that has learned to trust people early is usually calm and polite as an adult.
