Cardigans shed year round and blow their undercoat heavily once or twice a year, when hair comes out in handfuls for two to three weeks. Brush two or three times a week normally and daily during a shed with an undercoat rake and a slicker brush. A warm bath followed by a thorough blow-dry loosens a lot of dead coat during heavy shedding.
Never shave a Cardigan's double coat; it protects against both cold and heat and may grow back unevenly. Trim nails every three to four weeks, and check the thick fur between the pads, which can collect mud and ice. Their large upright ears need a quick weekly check for dirt or redness.
