Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy growth: milestones and weight estimates

How fast a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.

Chessie puppies reach adult height at around 12 months, but they fill out and mature slowly, and many do not settle mentally until 2 years or later. Adolescent Chessies, especially males, often test boundaries between 6 and 18 months, so keep training steady right through that period instead of easing off once the puppy basics are learned.

Swimming is excellent low-impact exercise for a growing Chessie, provided the water is calm and you are watching. Save long runs, jumping from heights and repetitive ball throwing on land until growth plates close, around 14 to 18 months. Keep puppies lean, and ask your vet to examine hips and elbows if you notice limping, bunny-hopping or stiffness after a rest.
