IWS puppies grow quickly and reach adult height around 12 months, but they keep filling out until about 18 to 24 months. Mentally, they are slow to mature and often remain puppyish, energetic and mouthy until 2 years or later, which surprises owners of a dog that already looks grown.
Protect growing joints by avoiding long runs on hard surfaces and repetitive jumping. Swimming and free play on grass are excellent low-impact activities for young dogs. Any limping that persists more than a day, or reluctance to jump into the car, should be checked by a vet.
