Chihuahua grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Chihuahua: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Smooth-coated Chihuahuas need a quick brush or rub with a rubber mitt once a week. Long coats need two or three gentle combings a week, with extra attention behind the ears and on the trousers, where tangles form. Both varieties shed year-round with heavier spells in spring and autumn, and a bath every 4 to 6 weeks is usually plenty.
Teeth are the real grooming priority. The small jaw is crowded, so plaque builds up fast. Aim to brush daily with a dog toothpaste and a finger brush. Nails also need trimming every 2 to 3 weeks because light dogs do not wear them down on pavement, and the prominent eyes should be wiped clean of discharge each day.
