Pomeranian grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Pomeranian: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush at least two or three times a week, and daily during a heavy shed, working in small sections with a pin brush followed by a wide-toothed comb. Line brushing (lifting the coat with one hand and brushing a thin layer underneath) prevents the hidden felting that forms behind the ears, in the armpits and on the fluffy trousers. Resist the urge to shave a Pom short as a shortcut, because a double coat clipped to the skin may grow back patchy or very slowly.
Adults drop their undercoat heavily once or twice a year, and unspayed females often shed after a season. Bathe every 4 to 6 weeks and dry thoroughly with a cool blower, since a damp undercoat can irritate the skin. Trim nails every 2 to 3 weeks, keep the hair around the feet and rear neat, and brush teeth daily with a dog toothpaste, because crowded small jaws collect plaque quickly.
