Chihuahua feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Chihuahua.
A 2.5 kg adult typically needs only about 150 to 200 kcal a day. With most dry foods that is 40 to 55 g, roughly half a cup. It sounds tiny, and it is, which is why a few extra treats or scraps from the table can push a Chihuahua into obesity quickly. A single 5 g piece of cheese is like a large snack for a dog this size.
Choose a small-breed kibble with little pieces that suit a tiny jaw, and use a shallow, stable bowl so the dog does not have to push its face deep into a container. Adults do well on two or three meals a day. Puppies under about 4 months need four or more small meals because toy puppies can run low on blood sugar if they go too long without food; weakness, wobbling or unusual sleepiness in a young puppy is a reason to call a vet straight away.

Puppy portions need measured weight, growth stage and the food’s energy content. A breed-average curve is not a feeding plan. Calculate with measured inputs and review the result with your vet.
