How fast a Chihuahua puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.
Chihuahua puppies are usually 100 to 150 g at birth and reach near adult weight around 9 to 10 months. Many owners are surprised by how little they grow after 6 months. The best predictor of adult size is still the size of the parents, so be wary of anyone promising a so-called teacup that will stay under 1.5 kg.
The molera, or soft spot on top of the skull, often shrinks with age but may stay open for life. Treat the head gently and never let children carry the puppy unsupervised. Most injuries in young Chihuahuas come from jumping off sofas or being dropped, so use ramps or steps and pick the dog up with one hand under the chest and the other supporting the rear.
