Havanese grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Havanese: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
A full Havanese coat needs brushing three or four times a week with a pin brush and a wide-toothed comb, working in sections down to the skin. Between 8 and 12 months, when the adult coat grows in, mats appear almost overnight and daily brushing becomes necessary for a few weeks. Many pet owners switch to a short all-over cut of about 3 to 5 cm to make life easier.
A bath every 3 to 4 weeks with a gentle shampoo is enough, followed by thorough drying, because damp hair mats faster. Pluck or trim hair from inside the ears and between the paw pads, clean under the eyes daily, and trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks. If you prefer a corded coat, learn how to separate the cords by hand before they fuse into one mass.
