Training a Clumber Spaniel: what works and what to expect

Clumbers are intelligent and willing, but they can be slow and stubborn. They respond best to calm, patient training built on food rewards, with short sessions that keep them interested and plenty of repetition. House training often takes longer than with other spaniels, so stay consistent.

Their scenting instinct is strong, so recall needs steady practice. Use a long line in open areas until your dog's recall is reliable. Clumbers love to carry things, and teaching 'give' early prevents a lifetime of stolen socks and shoes. Harsh methods tend to make them switch off entirely, while a handful of cheese and a cheerful voice will usually bring a Clumber round to your way of thinking.
