A practical grooming routine for the Dandie Dinmont Terrier: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Grooming is what sets the Dandie apart. Brush and comb two or three times a week, paying attention to the topknot, ears and legs. The body coat is traditionally hand-stripped or plucked to keep the pencilled texture, with a full groom every few months and light tidying between. The topknot is kept soft and rounded, and the ears are trimmed to leave a feather at the tip.
Pet owners can choose clipping instead, which is easier but changes the coat's texture and color. Either way, learn how to comb out mats, especially behind the ears and under the legs. The Dandie sheds very little, so dead hair stays in the coat unless removed. Trim nails every three to four weeks, and check ears and eyes weekly.
