Cairn Terrier grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Cairn Terrier: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush once or twice a week with a pin brush and a metal comb to stop the soft undercoat from knotting. Twice a year, the dead outer coat should be hand-stripped, either by you after a lesson or by a groomer who knows terriers. Stripping keeps the jacket harsh and weatherproof, while clipping tends to leave it softer, lighter in color and more prone to matting. Shedding is low when the coat is kept stripped.
Bathe only when truly dirty, perhaps every two to three months, since frequent washing softens the coat. Tidy the hair around the feet and ears with blunt scissors, trim nails every three to four weeks, and brush teeth several times a week, as small dogs are prone to tartar.
