Shiba Inu grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Shiba Inu: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Most of the year, a weekly brush with a slicker and an undercoat rake keeps a Shiba tidy. Then, twice a year, it blows its undercoat, and for two or three weeks you may fill a carrier bag with fur every day. Daily raking during those spells, plus one thorough bath followed by a strong blow dry, shifts the loose coat much faster than brushing alone.
Nail trims are the usual battleground. Many Shibas protest loudly when their feet are held, so start in puppyhood with one nail at a time and a reward per nail, or teach the dog to file its own nails on a scratch board. Bathe only every couple of months or when genuinely dirty, since frequent washing strips natural oils. Check ears weekly and brush teeth several times a week.
