Dogo Argentino health: what owners should know
Conditions the Dogo Argentino is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.
Congenital deafness is the breed's best-known issue; it is linked to the genes behind the white coat and can affect one or both ears. The Dogo is also predisposed to hip dysplasia, skin allergies and sensitivities, laryngeal paralysis and hypothyroidism. With good care, many live 10 to 12 years.
Choose a breeder who BAER tests every puppy, hip scores the parents and speaks openly about skin problems in the line. Keep your dog lean, shaded from strong sun and in regular, moderate exercise. See a vet for persistent scratching or chewing at the paws, crusty or raw skin, a change in bark with noisy breathing during exercise, or lameness that doesn't improve after a day of rest.
