Dogo Argentino feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Dogo Argentino.

A lean, active adult of 40 kg (88 lb) typically eats around 450 to 550 g of dry food daily, about 4.5 to 5.5 cups, in two meals. Dogos are muscular and should look it: a defined waist, the last rib faintly visible when moving and firm rather than soft shoulders. Extra weight hides quickly under that heavy muscle, so weigh your dog once a month.

Many Dogos react to certain ingredients with itchy skin, red paws or ear trouble, and redness shows up plainly on a white dog. If you see this, talk to your vet before switching diets again and again. Food guarding is another common trait: feed in a quiet space, keep children away from the bowl during meals and never feed two dogs side by side. As with most deep-chested breeds, avoid hard exercise just before and after eating.
