Training an English Foxhound: what works and what to expect

Foxhounds are intelligent but independent, bred to make decisions on a scent line rather than look to a handler for direction. Training takes patience. Food rewards work well, and short, consistent sessions with plenty of repetition pay off over time.

Expect house training to take longer than with many breeds, especially in adult ex-kennel hounds. Train recall constantly but never trust it fully near scent. The voice comes as part of the package: teach a quiet cue early, but accept that a Foxhound will bay when excited. Most do much better sharing a home with another dog than living as an only dog.
