English Foxhound health: what owners should know

English Foxhounds are generally sound, having been bred for function for centuries. Hip dysplasia, ear infections and injuries linked to their active life are the most commonly reported problems, and some kidney issues have been seen in the breed. Screening is less formalized than in many breeds, but good breeders and kennels hip score breeding stock and keep careful records of health through the generations.

Monitor weight, give joints time to mature, check ears regularly and inspect feet after runs. See your vet for lameness after exercise that does not settle within a day or two, head shaking or a smelly ear, drinking and urinating much more than usual, or a swollen belly with unproductive retching, which needs emergency care.
