Pointer puppies are leggy and fast-growing, typically reaching adult height by 10 to 12 months and filling out by 18 months, sometimes later in males. Many go through a gangly adolescent phase where they seem to be all legs, ribs and energy.
Their eagerness to run can outpace their developing joints. Let puppies play freely on soft ground and build distance slowly, but avoid long jogs, repeated jumping or running beside a bike until your vet confirms the growth plates have closed, often around 12 to 14 months. Keep the puppy slim, since extra weight adds stress to joints. Limping, swelling or sudden reluctance to run are reasons for a vet check.
