How much exercise does an English Pointer need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities an English Pointer enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Aim for at least 1.5 to 2 hours of exercise a day for a healthy adult, including genuine running rather than lead walking alone. Good outlets include off-lead running in safe, enclosed spaces, canicross, bikejoring once fully grown, field training and scent games. Many Pointers also love swimming on warm days.
Recall is the complication. A Pointer on a scent may range hundreds of meters ahead and ignore you entirely. Use a long line until recall is reliable, choose areas away from roads and livestock, and consider a GPS tracker. An under-exercised Pointer paces, whines, chews and raids the kitchen. An overworked one limps, seems stiff after resting or comes home with cracked pads, so watch for both.
