English Pointer grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the English Pointer: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
This is one of the easiest coats in the dog world. A quick weekly rub with a rubber mitt or soft bristle brush removes loose hair and brings up the shine. Baths are needed only after a roll in something unpleasant, perhaps every two to three months at most.
Shedding is moderate and year-round rather than seasonal, and the short hairs tend to weave into fabric. Check feet and pads after running, since active Pointers pick up cuts and splits. Keep nails short, look in the ears weekly, and run your hands over the body for scratches from brambles or gorse after a field outing. In cold, wet weather a well-fitted dog coat is a genuine help, since there is almost no undercoat to keep the dog warm.
