Greyhound grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Greyhound: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The coat needs very little work: a soft rubber brush once a week and an occasional bath with mild shampoo. Greyhounds have little of the usual doggy odor. Shedding is light for most of the year, with a slight increase in spring.
Pay more attention to skin, nails and teeth. The skin is thin and tears easily on branches or during play, so check your dog after walks. Nails and dewclaws should be trimmed every 2 to 3 weeks. Ex-racing dogs often come with poor teeth, so daily brushing and regular dental checks make a noticeable difference. Some Greys develop corns on their foot pads; persistent limping on hard ground is worth showing to a vet.
