Afghan puppies look nothing like adults. They are born with short fuzzy coats, and the long silky hair grows in gradually, with the full adult coat often not settled until 2 to 3 years. Height is mostly reached by about 12 months, but the body keeps filling out until about 18 months. Between roughly 9 and 18 months the puppy coat sheds out and the adult coat grows in, and mats form rapidly during this change.
Growing sighthounds are long-legged and clumsy, so avoid repeated jumping and long runs on hard surfaces during the first year. Let them gallop freely on grass in secure areas, which builds muscle without forcing the pace. Keep puppies lean, and have a vet check any lameness that lasts more than a day or two, or a puppy that seems stiff or reluctant to run.
