Irish Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Irish Terrier.
Around 160 to 220 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 1.5 to 2 cups split into two meals, is a normal intake for an 11 to 13 kg (24 to 29 lb) adult. Irish Terriers are usually lean, athletic dogs, but they can put on weight if treats pile up during training, so keep an eye on the waistline and adjust portions by body condition rather than by the bag.
Some can be possessive over food, especially when another dog is nearby. Feed multiple dogs in separate rooms or crates, each with its own bowl, and pick bowls up once they are empty. With a puppy, teach that a hand near the bowl brings good things by dropping in an extra treat as you pass.
A wiry beard picks up bits of food and water, so a quick wipe after meals keeps the face tidy and stops staining on light-colored coats.
