A 22 kg (48 lb) adult Springer usually needs about 280 to 380 g of dry food per day, roughly 3 to 4 cups, with the higher figure reserved for dogs working through the shooting season. Pet dogs walking an hour or two daily sit in the middle. Springers are enthusiastic eaters and skilled at stealing from worktops, so weigh portions rather than scooping by eye and check the waistline once a month.
Working dogs do better with a larger meal in the evening after a day in the field than with a big breakfast before it. Those long, feathered ears also dangle into food and water; a deeper bowl with a narrower opening keeps them cleaner, and a quick wipe of the ear tips after meals stops crusted food building up in the feathering.
