Swedish Vallhund feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Swedish Vallhund.

Vallhunds love food, and that is the main feeding issue. Most adults need about 150 to 220 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 1.5 to 2.25 cups, divided into two meals, with sport and farm dogs at the upper end. Extra weight sits badly on a long, short-legged back, so keep your dog trim enough that the ribs are easy to feel.

Food puzzles and scatter feeding on the lawn use up mental energy and slow down a fast eater. If your dog empties its bowl in under a minute, a slow feeder or snuffle mat turns each meal into a small job, which suits a herding brain nicely. Keep treats pea-sized and count training rewards as part of the daily ration.
