Chow Chow feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Chow Chow.
Chows are usually moderate eaters, and many are picky rather than greedy. An adult of 25 kg (55 lb) typically needs around 250 to 350 g of dry food a day, about 2.5 to 3.5 cups, split into two meals. Because the coat hides body shape so well, run your hands over ribs and waist every couple of weeks; a Chow can gain 3 kg before anyone notices by eye.
Feed in a calm spot away from other pets, as some Chows guard food. A steel or ceramic bowl is easy to keep hygienic, which matters for a breed whose ruff and lips collect crumbs and residue. Wipe around the mouth after meals if food tends to gather there, and in warm months keep fresh water in a heavy bowl out of direct sun.
