Irish Wolfhound grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Irish Wolfhound: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The rough, wiry coat is relatively easy to maintain. Brush once or twice a week with a pin brush and comb, paying attention to the beard, eyebrows and leg furnishings. Plucking out a few of the longest hairs now and then keeps a tidy outline. Shedding is moderate, with more in spring and autumn.
Bathe only when needed, perhaps every two to three months, since it is a big job. Trim nails every two to three weeks; long nails change how a giant dog stands. Clean the ears regularly, and give the dog a thick, supportive bed to prevent pressure sores and calluses on elbows and hocks.
