Wolfhound puppies grow faster than almost any other breed. At their peak they can gain around 2 kg (4.5 lb) a week, and many weigh 40 to 45 kg by six months. Most reach full height by about 18 months but keep maturing and filling out until two or three years.
That extraordinary growth calls for careful feeding and exercise. Use a giant breed puppy food to keep growth steady, avoid overfeeding, and allow free play on soft ground rather than long lead walks, which many breed clubs advise keeping short during the first year. Some breeders also have puppies screened for a liver shunt at around eight weeks, so ask about it. Talk to your vet promptly about lameness, swollen joints, reluctance to move, or front paws that knuckle over.
