Miniature Schnauzer grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Miniature Schnauzer: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Comb the beard, eyebrows and leg furnishings two or three times a week with a metal comb, working right down to the skin, because mats form fast behind the elbows and under the chin. Pet dogs are usually clipped every 5 to 8 weeks, which is quick but gradually softens the coat and fades the color. Show dogs are hand-stripped instead, a slower method that plucks out dead outer hair and keeps the coat harsh and the salt and pepper pattern crisp.
A bath every 4 to 6 weeks, usually at the groomer, is plenty. Nails need attention roughly every 3 weeks, since small dogs rarely wear them down on pavement. Hair grows inside the ear canal in this breed, so ask your groomer or vet whether yours needs it tidied, and sniff the ears weekly for any sour smell. Brush teeth several times a week, because a small mouth crowds teeth together and tartar builds quickly.
