West Highland White Terrier grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the West Highland White Terrier: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The coat is the Westie's signature and its biggest chore. Brush two to three times a week with a pin brush and metal comb, paying attention to the legs, beard and armpits. Twice a year, the outer coat can be hand-stripped, which means plucking the dead hair so a new harsh coat grows in. Clipping is easier and perfectly acceptable for pets, but it softens the coat and makes it collect dirt more readily.
Bathe only when needed, roughly every 4 to 6 weeks at most, using a gentle dog shampoo and rinsing thoroughly, since frequent bathing can dry sensitive skin. Check ears weekly, trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks, and keep the hair around the eyes short. Letting mud dry on white legs and then brushing it out often works better than washing.
