Old English Sheepdog health: what owners should know

Hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism and deafness all turn up in bobtails often enough to be worth asking about. Some dogs carry the MDR1 gene variant, which affects how they process certain medicines, and a DNA test is available. A condition affecting the airways and cilia, primary ciliary dyskinesia, also has a DNA test. Good breeders screen hips and eyes and use relevant DNA tests.

Keep your dog lean, cool and well groomed so skin problems are spotted early. See a vet if you notice cloudy eyes, a dry dull coat with weight gain and lethargy, pale gums, unusual tiredness or dark urine, as these need prompt attention.
