Irish Water Spaniel health: what owners should know

Irish Water Spaniels are known to be affected by hip dysplasia, an underactive thyroid, some eye conditions and hair loss problems in certain lines. Breeders typically screen hips and elbows, test thyroid function and have eyes examined before breeding.

Owners and breeders also report that some IWS react unusually to certain medications and anesthetics, so tell your vet about the breed before any procedure. Contact a vet if your dog develops bald patches, weight gain with lethargy, recurring ear infections, or lameness that lasts more than a day or two.
