Training a Rat Terrier: what works and what to expect

Rat Terriers are among the more trainable terriers, eager to learn and quick to pick up tricks. Positive reinforcement with small food rewards and play works best, and they often do well in obedience, rally and trick training. Short, varied sessions suit their busy minds.

Expect to work on barking, chasing and escaping. Teach a solid recall and a quiet cue early, supervise closely around small pets such as hamsters or rabbits, and check fences carefully, as a determined Rattie can dig under or scramble over a surprisingly tall barrier.
