Training a Shiba Inu: what works and what to expect

Shibas are intelligent, but they tend to ask what is in it for them before they comply. Repetitive drills bore them, and force produces stubborn refusal or the famous scream. Keep sessions brief, pay with high-value food, and focus on behaviors that matter in daily life rather than endless sits. House training is usually easy, because the breed dislikes soiling its living space.

Recall is the lifelong project. Even well-trained Shibas can fail when prey appears, so treat off-lead freedom as something for secure spaces only. A long line of 5 to 10 m (16 to 33 ft) lets you practice recall while still giving freedom safely. Cooperative care training, such as teaching the dog to rest its chin in your palm while you look at its eyes or ears, pays off at every vet visit.
