Rat Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Rat Terrier.
Portion size depends heavily on which size you have. A 6 kg (13 lb) miniature usually eats around 90 to 120 g of dry food a day, about 1 to 1.25 cups, while a 10 kg (22 lb) standard needs around 140 to 180 g, roughly 1.5 to 2 cups. Split it into two meals, and add a little for working farm dogs or very active sport dogs.
Rat Terriers tend to be enthusiastic eaters and can put on weight quickly when treats are frequent. For a 6 kg dog, a single slice of cheese is a meaningful share of the day's calories. Weigh the daily ration each morning, use part of it as training rewards, and serve the rest in a puzzle feeder that lets your dog 'hunt' for its breakfast.
