Westies are clever but independent, so the question is less 'can they learn' and more 'do they see the point'. Short sessions, high-value food rewards and a sense of fun work well. Repetitive drills and heavy corrections backfire and make a Westie dig in its heels.

Priorities are recall, a solid 'leave it' for chasing, and calm greetings. Give digging an approved sandpit and reward the dog for using it. Teaching a 'quiet' cue early helps, because a Westie that learns barking brings attention will happily keep the conversation going.
