A practical grooming routine for the Rat Terrier: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Grooming is quick. A weekly rub with a rubber mitt or soft bristle brush lifts loose hair, with a daily session during the spring and autumn shed, when the short coat can drop a surprising amount. Bathe every couple of months or when your dog rolls in something unpleasant.
Dental care matters most. Small dogs are prone to tartar and gum disease, so brush teeth several times a week and have the mouth checked at every vet visit. Trim nails every three to four weeks, since a light dog on grass rarely wears them down, and check ears weekly.
