Redbone Coonhound feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Redbone Coonhound.
An adult of around 27 kg (60 lb) usually eats about 300 to 400 g of dry food daily, roughly 3 to 4 cups, split into two meals. Working hounds in season may need more. Redbones are enthusiastic eaters and gain weight readily once their activity drops, so measure every meal and trim portions for older, quieter dogs.
Those long ears dip into the food and water bowls, collecting grease and bacteria. A deep, narrow bowl lets the ears fall outside the rim, or you can slip a soft snood over the head at meal times. Wipe the ear tips after eating. Counter surfing is a breed habit: a Redbone standing on its hind legs reaches kitchen counters with ease, so keep food well back.
Feed at least an hour before or after hard exercise, since deep-chested hounds carry some bloat risk.
