Redbones are generally robust hounds, often living 12 to 15 years. Known concerns include hip dysplasia, ear infections linked to the long, heavy ears, obesity and eye problems such as cataracts. Bloat is a risk shared with other deep-chested breeds.
Reputable breeders X-ray the parents' hips and have their eyes examined. At home, keep weight lean, clean ears weekly and use a slow-feeder bowl if your dog gulps. See a vet if your dog shakes its head often, scratches at its ears or has a smell or discharge from them, becomes lame, or has a swollen belly and unproductive retching after a meal.
