Wirehaired Vizsla health: what owners should know

Most Wirehaired Vizslas are healthy, but the breed can be affected by hip and elbow dysplasia, some eye conditions, hypothyroidism, skin allergies and, as a deep-chested breed, bloat. Ear infections also occur, particularly in dogs that swim often.

Good breeders hip and elbow score their breeding dogs and have eyes examined. Keep your dog lean and fit, dry the ears after swimming, and check for cuts and thorns after hunting. Call your vet urgently for a swollen belly or unproductive retching, and book a visit for persistent limping, head shaking, ear odor, or a sudden drop in energy.
