How much exercise does a Saint Bernard need?

Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Saint Bernard enjoys and signs of too much or too little.

Adults need moderate exercise, usually 30 to 60 minutes a day of steady walking with time to sniff and some gentle play. They are not built for jogging, long ball-chasing sessions or agility jumps. Many love snow, and once fully grown some enjoy cart pulling or short hikes in cool weather.

Heat is the real limit. The dense coat and sheer bulk make overheating a genuine danger once temperatures pass about 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F), especially when humid. Walk early and late in summer, provide shade and cool tiled floors, and never leave a Saint in a parked car. Frantic panting, a wide flattened tongue, bright red gums, wobbliness or collapse point to heat stress: move the dog somewhere cool and call a vet at once.
