Training a Saint Bernard: what works and what to expect

Saints are willing and gentle but rarely quick to obey for its own sake. They learn best with patient, reward-based training and plenty of repetition, and can dig their heels in when tired or bored. Start foundation manners at 8 weeks: loose-lead walking, sitting for greetings and waiting at doors. These habits need to be solid before the puppy outweighs you, which can happen within the first year.

Socialization matters because a fearful giant is very hard to manage. Introduce your puppy calmly to visitors, traffic, vet handling and car trips during the first months. Teach a reliable leave it and drop, because a Saint can reach anything on a kitchen worktop. Food and praise work well; long, repetitive drills do not.
