Saint Bernard puppies grow at an astonishing rate. A puppy may weigh 7 to 9 kg at 8 weeks and 40 kg or more by 6 months. Most of the height is in place by about 18 months, but chest, head and muscle keep developing until 2 to 3 years of age.
Fast growth stresses bones and joints, so the aim is slow, steady growth rather than an impressively big puppy. Feed a large or giant breed puppy food with controlled calcium, avoid adding supplements unless your vet advises them, and keep the puppy slim enough that ribs are easy to feel. Limit stairs, leaps in and out of the car and long walks until growth slows. A young Saint that limps, stands with bowed or knuckled front legs, or cries when getting up should be examined by a vet promptly.
