Training a Siberian Husky: what works and what to expect

Huskies learn quickly but see little point in repetition. They were bred to take direction from a driver at a distance and to make their own call on thin ice, so blind obedience was never part of the design. Short, varied sessions with high-value food, plus games that let the dog think, bring out their best.

Recall is the great weakness. Even a well-trained husky may vanish after a deer and cover several kilometers before looking back, so most owners keep them on a long line or in fenced areas for life. Teach 'leave it', a solid wait at doors and gates, and crate or pen training early. Check fences for gaps, add dig guards and aim for a height of at least 1.8 m (6 ft).
