Training a Norwegian Elkhound: what works and what to expect

Elkhounds are intelligent and quick to learn, but they were bred to make decisions on their own while hunting. They respond best to short, varied, reward-based training with plenty of food. Repetitive drills bore them, and harsh methods often lead to stubborn resistance.

Barking is the biggest challenge. Teach a quiet cue early, reward calm silence, and give plenty of exercise and mental work. Recall should be trained patiently with high-value rewards and a long line, but many Elkhounds never become fully reliable off lead in open country. Early socialization with other dogs helps reduce same-sex friction later.
