Training a Pembroke Welsh Corgi: what works and what to expect

Pembrokes learn fast and remember everything, including the things you did not mean to teach. They respond well to food rewards and short, varied sessions of about five minutes. Because they were bred to make decisions without a handler nearby, they will test whether a rule still applies, so consistency from every person in the house matters.

The most common challenge is heel nipping aimed at children and joggers. Rather than punishing it, teach an alternative: a 'find it' cue that sends the dog's nose to the floor, or a toy it can carry during excited moments. Work on a quiet cue early too, by rewarding the first second of silence after a bark. Broad socialization with visitors, other dogs and household noise helps turn a watchful puppy into a confident adult rather than a reactive one.
